Within the body of Kırklareli University, the Science Communication Office (BİO), established under the coordination of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), held its first event on June 27, 2025, aiming to build a bridge between science and society. The event, held at Yayla Park, attracted great public interest with the title “Should Tea Be Drunk with Sugar or Without?”
The event, designed to convey scientific data to the public in a language accessible to everyone, was attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Gençbay, Rector’s Advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. İskender Gümüş, Head of the Science Communication Office Asst. Prof. Dr. Haluk Keskin, academics, and local residents.
Opening the event, Asst. Prof. Dr. Haluk Keskin emphasized the importance of integrating scientific knowledge into daily life, stating:
“This office is an extension of our university’s mission to contribute to society. Science can find its place not only in laboratories but also in a cup of tea enjoyed in the park.”
Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Gençbay noted that they responded quickly to YÖK’s call to establish Science Communication Offices, saying:
“We aim to build a stronger and more effective scientific connection with society. The Science Communication Office will be the carrier of this vision.”
Guest speaker Res. Asst. Dr. Esma Oğuz, in her talk titled “Should Tea Be Drunk with Sugar or Without?”, discussed a wide range of topics—from the history and cultural meaning of tea to sugar consumption habits and its effects on health—presenting them in simple language backed by scientific data. Conducting an interactive conversation with participants, Oğuz said:
“Bringing science together with everyday life is our shared responsibility.”
It was announced that the events organized by the Kırklareli University Science Communication Office will continue in the future, expanding to cover fields such as health, environment, agriculture, culture, and social sciences.
